Achilleion Palace, Paleokastritsa, & Old Corfu Town
Tours including Old Corfu Town, Achilleion Palace, and Paleokastritsa provide you opportunity to experience three “must do” places on the island. These tours range from 4.5 to 7.5 hours. Achilleion Palace, a 30 minute drive, is typically the first stop. Completed in 1891, this palace, built in neoclassical style, boasts lovely gardens and and a mural depicting Achilles. The scenic village of Paleokastritsa follows next. Tours may also feature a photo opportunity in Lakones and a visit to the Monastery of the Virgin Mary, circa 1288 with newer buildings dating to the 1700's, next. At the monastery, there's a chapel which houses a museum of Byzantine and ecclesiastical art. In Old Corfu Town, highlights include the Esplanade, the Palace of St. Michael and St. George, and the Church of St. Spyridion. Typically as time permits, you'll be able to shop & stroll about Old Corfu Town.
Price: Adults expect to pay from $49 to $109, depending on tour length and agenda.
Booking Advice: Because of the walking involved, these tours are rated as physically difficult. Walking on these tours includes traversing uneven surfaces, stairs, and inclines. In Old Corfu Town, tours may only include exterior views of highlights. Lunch is typically included in longer (7.5 hour) tours. In our opinion, shorter tours (such as 4.5 hour) might be a bit too brief to fully appreciate the tour highlights.
Corfu Scenic Drives
Because so many tours in Greece involve a tremendous amount of walking, it's always nice to find those coach tours that permit opportunity to see the sights with a bit more ease. These excursions typically drive along Paleokastritsa Bay, considered to be very beautiful, and stop for a photo break in Lakones. From there, the tour then goes through mountain villages to Corfu Town. Once in the town area, highlights include the Palaiopolis ruins, the ex-monarch's summer palace, Mon Repos, Garitsa Bay, the Old Fortress, the Palace of St. George and St. Michael, the New Venetian Palace, and San Rocco Square. These tours are usually 3.5 to 4 hours long.
Price: Adults expect to pay from $50 t0 $54.
Booking Advice: Even though these tours are rated as easy in terms of physical exertion, walking is still involved. Most tours do include, time permitting, a chance to shop and stroll about in Corfu Town.
